Problems uploading .ssa files!

Hi. I've subtitled two videos, but I can't upload them! I waited even ten minutes to upload a file with merely 45 lines... I also tried uploading in srt without luck.

When I try to upload, it says "processing, please be patient..."

How can I submit subtitles to youtube videos if the upload keeps failing?

I hope you can help me find a fast solution.

Best regards,

Frank.

This is what my screen looks like.

Hi, Frank Einar Josep

When I read your question here, I saw you had also created a topic, which was the right thing to do as topics go to the tech staff - it's great that you did that.

Claude

I have the exaxt same problem. I am trying to upload an .ass subtitle file, but it gives me that text message "Processing, please be patient..." and never gets anywhere. It's just stuck like that. Why is this? Is this a common thing at Amara.org at the moment? Or is it because I'm trying to upload an .ass file? It says it takes .ssa files, and I am fairy sure that's the same as .ass, just with a different name. Am I wrong about this?

Stay creative,

Thank you for your report, Lukas.

SSA and ASS are very similar, but not exactly the same: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubStation_Alpha.

However, if you have not used any of the features that only exist in ASS, maybe you could try to make a second copy of your subtitles, and simply rename the extension .ssa in the copy, then try uploading that?

If it does not work, you could try to convert your .ass file to one of the accepted formats using http://subtitleconverter.net/ (I haven't tried it yet, though).

Happy converting

Claude

I tried doing it, but instead changed the extension to .SRT, and now the subtitles, for some weird reason, are out of sync, and not timed the same way as the .ass was. And I did manage to upload the .srt one by the way. Then I tried exporting them from the program  to the regular .ass format and changed the extension to .ssa this time, and they won't upload either.

Sorry, Lukas,  I'm getting lost. Could you create a ticket (via http://support.amara.org/support/tickets/new) please, attaching all your subtitle files - original .ass , .srt, exported .ass and .ssa, and indicating the Amara page's URL? Is it the same http://www.amara.org/en/videos/maShRJvxtY5v/info/dynamo-ep1/ URL that you mentioned in your reply to the Bulk modification of time-codes? topic?

The ticket will go to Amara's tech staff who will be able to help you.

Best

Claude

Hi all,

Changing the extension won't work, because the internal parser needs to be able to handle the contents.

You can download a .ssa file from Amara, open it in Notepad++, and replace in your .ass file the headers (the lines before the subtitles proper; the last line of the Sub Station Alpha headers is usually 'Style'). Save the subtitles and then change the extension to .ssa.

Note that Amara's SSA support isn't 100% implemented, so you may prefer to load your subtitles on Jubler, SubtitleEdit or other subtitle editor and convert them to VTT or SRT.

Thank you very much, Fran. So if Lukas' subtitle editor supports ASS, he coud also directly use it to convert to VTT or SRT, without first manually editing it into an SSA file?
