This article will help you create and log in to your Amara user account. Everyone on Amara starts out with a free user account; this applies to both members of teams and also Amara Public Workspace users.
Signing up is easy and it’s free!
With your Amara Free user account, you can:
Subtitle public videos on Amara.
Add videos by their URL.
Find volunteer teams to join.
Learn more about joining Volunteer teams on Amara, and also options for creating your own team.
Amara users must have at least one language set on their account to be able to join an Amara team.
Note: If you do not have an Amara account yet, you can still browse and search for public videos and watch them with subtitles in the Amara video player.
If you want to submit videos and create subtitles on Amara, you need to create a user account and log in. To begin, open the Sign Up For Free page.
Three ways to create a new user account on Amara:
Selecting a username and a password.
Using an existing social network account.
Using an existing Google account.
IMPORTANT: The user account you set on the Amara.org sign up page is not valid for
the Amara Support Center, which requires separate registration. However, please keep these in mind:
You do not need to sign in or register to receive support; You can email support@amara.org at any time and we’ll be happy to help you.
The only time you will need to log in to the Amara Support Center is to post in the Forums or view any support ticket history.
Access the account creation page by clicking the Sign up for free button in the top right corner of the Amara.org home page.
Enter your desired username, the email address you want to use for Amara communications, and your password. Re-enter your password to confirm, agree to the privacy policy and terms of service, then click the Create Account button.
Your username should:
Contain no spaces.
Contain no special characters (@ . + - _ symbols are accepted).
Be unique. If the username is taken, you will see this message and you should choose another username:
Note: Both Amara usernames and passwords are case sensitive, so please note the username and password exactly as you enter them during sign up.
Provide a valid email address when creating a new user account. Make sure that you have access to this email before signing up. This email address will be used for resetting your password and for receiving important notifications about your account.*
If you do not sign up with a valid email address, you will not be able to reset your email or password in the future, and some Amara features will be inaccessible until you confirm a valid email address.
After entering all necessary information, click the Create Account button. If all the data you have entered is accepted, a new user account will be created.
If you create a new Amara account successfully, you will be signed in automatically, which means you should now see your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen:
Confirming Your Account
After you create an Amara account, you will receive an email asking you to confirm your account.
Please check your Spam or Junk folders for new emails if the confirmation email does not arrive in your Inbox.
After you confirm your account, you are ready to start exploring Amara!
* Amara respects your privacy. Your email address will only be used as the confirmation of your identity and for communication with you. It will not be disclosed to any third party. Learn more about Amara's privacy policy.
Instead of creating and memorizing a new username and password to retype each time you log in, you can create an Amara account using an existing third-party site account including Google, Facebook and Twitter.
You should be signed in to your social network account in your browser before you use one-click login. If you are not already logged in, you will be asked to log in to your social network account before proceeding to sign up on Amara, and/or authorize the app to access.
For example, if you created your Amara account with your Gmail login information “user@gmail.com,” you must be signed in to that Google account in your browser to use the auto-login button. If you are signed into another account, our site will prompt you to create a new account instead of logging into your existing account.
Click the site of your choice to get started.
Note: If at this point you decide that you do not wish to create a new user account using a social network account, there are a couple of ways to return to the main Sign Up page:
If a popup window opened, click the X to close the window.
Or, click the Cancel link, then the Return to Amara.org button, then the Create a new account link.
If you are not already logged in, you will be prompted to log in using your existing login information for that site. The Amara site will then check to make sure that there is no existing user account associated with the social network account you have chosen.
If no match exists, you can confirm the email address associated with your social network account, agree to the privacy policy and terms of service, then click the Create Account button:
Check the email address on the Sign Up page. Make sure you have access to this email account before you click Proceed. If you enter another email address on this page, emails from Amara will go to that address.
This email address will be used for resetting your password and for receiving important notifications about your account.*
If you do not sign up with a valid email address, you might have trouble resetting your password in the future, and some Amara features will be inaccessible until you are able to confirm a valid email address.
After you confirm your email address, a new user account will be created for you and you will automatically be signed in for your first user session with Amara.
After you are logged in, you can go to your Account page to verify that you have a valid email address associated with your account and update your information if needed.
If you created a user account with the use of a social network account, you can still have a username and can create a password on your Account page, if you wish. If you do so, in the future you can use either your username and password or you can use the auto-login buttons.
* Amara respects your privacy. Your email address will only be used as the confirmation of your identity and for communication with you. It will not be disclosed to any third party. Learn more about Amara's privacy policy.
Privacy and Special Considerations
Make sure you are logged into the linked Facebook or Twitter account in your browser, especially if you share your computer with other people.
If someone else is signed in to their Facebook or Twitter account in your browser, our site will attempt to login or sign up with that account. In this case, login to the correct Facebook or Twitter account and go back to the Sign Up page and try again.
It is possible to create several Amara accounts with the same email. Make sure you know which email address is associated with your Amara account so you can reset your password if you need to.
If you create an account on Amara using an existing identity, some information might be imported from your social network account, like your email address.
You can check your account information by clicking Account in the dropdown menu where your username is at the top right corner of the page. View your username, email address, and connected external accounts in your Account Tab.
If you have a user account on Amara, but you don’t see your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen, then it is time to Login!
Click the Login button at the top right corner of the page.
Two ways to log in:
With your username and password.
Using a social network account.
If you created your Amara account with the use of a username and password instead of linking a social network account, enter them in the bottom part of the Login page, to proceed.
If the username and password match an active user account, you will be successfully signed in and you will see your username in the top right corner of the Amara home page.
If the password did not match the username, you will be prompted to retry.
Note: Both Amara usernames and passwords are case sensitive, so please note the username and password exactly as you enter them during sign up.
You can log in with a single click if you created an Amara account with social network login information instead of a username and password.
On the Login page, click the button for the social network site that you used to create your account:
If you are concerned about your account security or you have forgotten your previous password, you might want to reset your password.
Note: If you signed up using one-click login with a third party social media site, your Amara account will not have a password. You will need to set a password to access some actions that require higher security protection. Use either the option to Reset Your Password from Your Account Page or Reset Your Password from the Login Page.
Change Your Password from Your Account Page
If you are signed in, open the Account page in your profile by clicking your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen and selecting Account from the drop-down menu:
If you know your current password, you can change it on your Account page directly:

Enter your new password twice to confirm.
Click the Save Changes button.
Reset Your Password from Your Account Page

Enter a new password twice to confirm, then click the Set new password button:
Reset Your Password from the Login Page
You can reset your password without being logged into Amara.
Click the Login link in the top right-hand corner of the Amara home page.
Then click the Forgot your username or password link under the Log In button:
On the Password Reset page, enter the email address associated with your user account on Amara.
Then click the Send Recovery Email button:
You will receive an email with a link to reset your password. Click the link in the email and enter a new password twice to confirm, then click the Set new password button:
