We recently implemented temporary settings to require logging in to view public videos on Amara.org. While we avoid creating any blocks for access to public online content we are requesting people to have an account to view captions and subtitles added to public videos on Amara.org while we find the best long-term solution.

  • This maintains access for all the free public users, as well as our professional and private teams on Amara to be sure everyone has access without any 503/403 errors.

Anyone can still view videos for free simply by creating an Amara login through the Amara sign up page.

  • Watching public videos with captions and subtitles on Amara.org is still entirely free and open to anyone who creates a free account and verifies their email address. This helps ensure the site is not affected by automated systems.

  • Creating a free username on Amara is private.

    • We do not share or sell your personal details with third parties.

    • You can see our Privacy Policy for complete details.

Creating captions and subtitles on Amara has not changed.

An Amara username has always been required to be able to open a video in the Amara editor to create captions and subtitles.

Suggestions to help anyone view captions and subtitles using the URL link to a video:

If you own the content you are sharing:

If you are the owner of the YouTube or Vimeo channel where your videos are hosted you can integrate the channel with your Amara username or team.

  • Once integrated all completed subtitles can be automatically exported to the public host channel.

  • This will allow you to share the original public channel link for everyone to view the video with all completed subtitles without signing in Amara.org.

  • Learn more about how to integrate your Amara username or team.

If you are sharing public content you do not own:

  • If they want to view completed subtitles on Amara they can still view your videos by creating an Amara account and verifying the email address, which takes only a few minutes and protects all Amara users and content on the Amara platform.

We would love to hear your feedback and any questions you may have to help us find the best long-term solution for everyone.
